Curly Girl Convo: Ayanda

Today I’m featuring Ayanda, a lady I’ve approached after I’ve been stalking her Facebook profile, lol. Here’s what she had to say…

Ayanda 1

How long have you been wearing your hair in its natural state?

I’ve been natural for about 1 year and 6 months.

When did you decide to do this?

In a nutshell: I found myself . Society’s ideals of a “woman” really complicated things for me. I felt the need to relax my hair  and straightened it because  I wanted to fit in so badly. Therefore, the decision to go natural was more about creating myself and accepting my identity. Probably one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Did you do the big chop of transition?

I walked passed a barber one day and the thought randomly crossed my mind. I sat in line and when my turn finally came all I said was “a number 2 please” with a slight giggle. I did the big chop and the rest is history

How did your friends/family/partner react to your decision?

Due to the fact that it was a random decision, nobody expected it (including me). However, they loved it. They completely supported my decision.

What is your current hair regime?

I try to moisturize my hair and massage my scalp as much as possible. I rock wash and go’s most of the time. So my hair regimen is simply “wash & Go”. I apply leave-in conditioner after washing my hair and a sealing oil.

Any favourite products that you use? (where can we find it?)

Aunt Jackie’s products works really well on my hair. One can purchase it at any Clicks store. Nevertheless, coconut oil remains the Queen of my afro!

What is your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge was staying true to the natural journey, especially when it started growing after the big chop. Besides that, I don’t have atoo many challenges, I love my hair.

What do you love most about your hair?

The versatility. I also love the fact that it curls really well but it’s also thick enough to rock a stretched afro.

Do you have a natural hair icon? Local or international?

No, I admire all natural queens.
