I prefer making home cooked meals for my family during the week and all those quick meals I leave for weekends. It’s difficult to prepare meals after work when you have so much to do. Today I am sharing with you some of the things I prepare ahead of time to save me time during the week.
There is at least 1 meal per week that includes rice. I prefer using brown rice but it takes forever to cook. Most days I cook at least 2 meal’s worth of rice and freeze it two separate bags for the days I need it. Another way to save time is to “soak” the rice in boiling water in the morning before you leave for work and by the time you get home from work, it will only take a few minutes to be ready.
A pasta dish is a must every week because…kids! Most times it will be spaghetti bolognaise and other times some casserole type of pasta. I love using a mixture of canned and fresh tomatoes in my bolognaise sauce so I make a huge batch (sometimes for the entire month) and freeze it in batches. When it’s time to use it, I just brown my meat, add the tomato base and cook the pasta.
If you normally include stews in your weekly menu, it might be a god idea to brown your meat ahead of time. A good appliance to invest in is a slow cooker. You can prepare your meat in there and when ready and cooled down, you can freeze it in batches that is ready to use when needed.
We all know how timeconsuming peeling and chopping veg are. Things like peppers and onions can be frozen and thawed when needed. Peeling your carrots and butternut and chopping them up is a great idea to helo you save time when cooking. You can also chop up things like cabbage, give it a quick steam and then freeze it for later use.
Make huge batches of your favourite soups and freeze it for all the cold nights when your too cold to stand infront of the stove to cook.
I hope this post will be helpful to you or someone you know. If you have other tips on food to prepare ahead of time, please share them in the comments below.
