Natural Hair

Wash day…

I frequently get bombarded with questions such as:

“How did you get your hair like that?”; “What products do you use to get your hair like that?”; Did you have a curly perm?” and my personal favourites, “Where did you buy that weave?” or “Is that your own hair?”. Sometimes people want to touch it to see if I’m not lying…what?? Seriously?? My answer? I don’t do anything…I just get up, wash and go.

I am fully aware that this is not the case for every single curly girl out there. Some of us really needs to spend a few minutes or in some cases hours in front of the mirror apply lotions and potions to our tresses to achieve the desired look. Then we also have those who have to style their hair before they go to bed to make sure it is set by the next morning. This is also one of the reasons why a lot of people say that being “natural” is too much work.

For those of you who doesn’t know, I’ve done the VERY BIG CHOP back in 2010(you can read about it here), and the in June 2015, I decided to do another chop, but this time not so big. So, back to 2010, when I decided on shaving all my hair off, it wasn’t about going natural, me shaving my head was like – okay, I’m sick of relaxer and blow-drying  and all that crappy things that takes hours to do. Me shaving my hair was – let’s see what happens if I shave everything off and start all over again (without relaxer, etc.).

During that time, a friend of a friend of a friend started a Facebook group called Natural Curls in SA, (which I joined of course) where she posted about being natural, regimes, ingredients that is good and also not good for your hair etc. and based on what I read and learnt there it was clear to me that I was about to go natural.

Soooo, back to why I am writing this post…How do I get my hair like this??

My hair regime:

I co-wash my hair between 1 – 2 times per week and clarify once a month.

Shampoo/cleansing:

Clicks Detanglish ShampooGlyco lemon

  • colgate_palmolive_classic_conditioner_egg_350ml
  • Once a month I was my hair with Bicarbonate of soda (to get rid of any build up)
  • I also use Clicks brand Kids Detangling Shampoo – it’s sulphate free.
  • Every other time when I wash, I use conditioner. I usually use cheap brands such as Colgate or Glyco Lemon   (which lathers up real well). I’ve recently tried the new Garnier Ultimate Blends range (conditioner only).

Conditioner:

tresemme-naturals-conditioner-nourishing-moisture-350x350Sunsilk treatmentdark-and-lovely-ultra-cholesterol-conditioning-treatment-250ml-6761-p

  1. Tresemme naturals is my go conditioner
  2. When I deep condition, which is twice a month, I use the Dark and Lovely Cholesterol treatment or Sunsilk Nourishing Soft and Smooth Intensive Treatment Mask.
  3. If I do run out of deep conditioner – which is not impossible – I add a little olive oil to my normal conditioner.
  4. After this I style my hair. I usually wear my curls out in an afro…wash-and-go(will write a post on how I accomplish the perfect wash and go that last more than 2 days)

Please note that the products I use works for me and doesn’t necessarily means that it will work for you too. You are welcome to try it out at your own risk.

Hope you enjoyed the post. Please post any questions you might have in the comment section and I will answer it as best I can.

Till later
