Dark & Lovely Au Naturale now in SA

I was extremely excited when I was approached to test and review these amazing products. I first inquired about this brand when I saw it on the Instagram page of someone in the USA. I was unaware that there were already plans to introduce it on the South African Market. Dark and Lovely Au Naturale is developed especially for South African natural hair types. Yes, you heard right, this product was specially made to care for our hair here in South Africa.

The packaging is very colorful and will definitely grab your attention in the hair isle. On opening it, you’ll get this whiff of fruity flavors that smell so good you’d want to start eating it. (Don’t eat it though…haha) The range consists of the following:

  • Moisture Replenishing Shampoo 250ml
  • Knot Out Conditioner 250ml
  • Plaiting Pudding Cream 250ml
  • Afro Moisturizing Butter 250ml

I have previously written about the lack of products for natural hair in South Africa and also how expensive it can become if you try to purchase some of the highly recommended brands online. The Au Natural range promises the same results as some of the leading brands out there. It is free from mineral oils, parabens and petrolatum which is a total no-no for my hair. Even though the shampoo contains sulfates it is not hard on your hair at all. Many naturals steer clear of sulfates, as if it is the devil himself, however if used in moderation it is unlikely to cause damage. But like I always say, you know your hair and you know what works and what doesn’t.

The shampoo lathers up real nice but it doesn’t make your hair feel straw like and the conditioner serves as a good detangler. #realtalk I have used both products on my daughter’s hair which tends to tangle very quickly. However, with this product there were no tangling issues. The products also leaves your hair soft and smelling real fresh…for long.

The styling products was something I really looked forward to using. It’s simply amazing, especially on my wash-n-go days and on the hairstyle I try on my daughter for school.

For her hair I use the Plaiting Pudding Cream which works well when doing twists or even cornrows. It has a really thick consistency that I really like and kind of “tames” the frizz I struggle with around the edges. I’m sure it will work well when used for bantu knots a’s well.

The Afro Moisturizing Butter gives my wash-n-go’s great definition and keeps it moisturized…as stated on the tub. It’s so important to keep your hair moisturized when wearing it down as it loses a lot of moisture in the process.

The Shampoo & Conditioner will retail at R34,95 which I think is totally awesome and the Butter and Cream for a low R69,95 and will be available in Clicks and Dis-Chem stores soon. I will be writing another post showing you some styles that I’ve tried out using these products.

Till later.
