Natural hair product review: Nilotiqa Hair Care range

In December I was asked to be one of the panellists discussing all things natural hair at the All Thins Beauty Expo in the CTICC. This was something to totally out of my comfort zone but I did it anyway.

At the expo, I met the lovely Thokozile Mangwiro, the founder of Nilotiqa Hair Care who kindly gifted me with a few of the products in the range. Thokozile have been wearing her hair natural for the last 15 years and this inspired her to create a natural hair care line of her own.

I am always open to trying new products and if it doesn’t work on my hair, there’s a fat chance that it will work on one of my kids’ hair for sure. I have tried everything on all of our hair and this is what we thought.

First impression

My first impression of the Shea & Coco Collection was it’s smell. I love good smelling products and this range is so fresh smelling, like apples. When you open it up and get a whiff of the smell, you seriously have to keep yourself from chugging it down your throat. The shampoo and conditioner comes in a bottle with a pump fitting that makes it easy to use, even in the shower. I wish the detangler would came with a pump as the product is a bit difficult to get out but the thick butter can easily be scooped out of the jar.

Deep Cleansing Shampoo

The shampoo promises to cleanse, remove build-up and purify your hair. I found that it did exactly that. This sulphate free shampoo is so soft on the hair and my  hair didn’t leave my (and my kids) hair feeling stripped. I think it must be the moisturizing effect of the shea butter.

Replenishing Conditioner

The conditioner has a thick consistency, something I require my conditioners to be. it contains avocado oil and claims to condition, restore moisture and softens your hair. I found that it works best on my hair if I use it as deep conditioner when I put on a plastic cap and apply heat to penetrate it deeper into my strands. After I rinse it off, it left my hair soft, moisturized and conditioned, as promised.

Detangling Cream

The detangling cream contains panthenol and the packaging says that it detangles, hydrates and restores manageability. The conditioner did the trick for me so it was no need for me to use this cream. I have however used it on my son’s hair which is often matted once we take down his twists. I loved how it makes my job easier getting rid of all those tangles.

Deep Moisture Hair Butter

On the tub it says that it:

• retains moisture – CORRECT
• Locks in moisture – CORRECT
• Hydrates – CORRECT

This is clearly my favourite out of the range. It’s the perfect product to add to my wash and go routine as it is very moisturizing and does not weigh my hair down. I also use it when I style my son’s hair in twists and it keeps his hair looking moisturized for the entire week.

Nilotiqa’s goal is to sell 100K products by December 2019 and once they reach this, they will be able to sponsor 3 students entire 1st year university fees for 2020.
